

GQ: Is that arrogance hard to shake when a scene is over? You have to tap into and embrace the negative feelings you try to repress in everyday life. GQ: Is the preparation different when you play a villain? When I put it on, I feel like everyone is subservient to me. It completely abstracts you form everyday life. Jack Gleeson: Joffrey’s rings-really decadent gold rings with opals-helped me get into the character. GQ: Was there one specific piece of his costume? I didn’t need to create new characteristics or mannerisms, and the hair, makeup, and costumes helped as well. Martin, the writer of the books the show is based on, because the character is so perfectly described and analyzed. Jack Gleeson: I have to give all the credit to George R. GQ: How much of Joffrey was on the page and how much is you? Joffrey is definitely informed by those performances.

It’s something that’s so easy to slip into because I’ve seen so many villainous characters on TV and onstage and in films. And I think my portrayal of Joffrey is very clichéd.

GQ: Do you worry about repeating villainous clichés? I only had one audition, and the producers and writers were laughing at my performance because I was being so snotty and arrogant. Jack Gleeson: When I was auditioning for Joffrey. GQ: When did you figure out you could, well, personify evil? Can this car just go under." And you’re like, "Yeah, I hope so too, man, and I hope the cops don’t come." But, wait a second, he just killed this girl for no reason! I was rooting for a murderer. The scene is so tense and you see his face and he’s like, "Oh, please. Jack Gleeson: There’s a scene in Psycho, when Norman Bates has just killed Marion and put her in the trunk of a car and he’s pushing the car into, like, a lagoon. Sometimes when I’m sitting on my throne, I think of Phoenix sitting on his, with that smirk on his face. Jack Gleeson: A big influence was Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator. GQ: What performances influenced King Joffrey’s petulant brand of evil? As for actors, Rutger Hauer was pretty perfect in Blade Runner. It’s terrifying because it has no empathy, and you can’t rationalize with it as you would a human being. Jack is interested in patient-focused research with a particular focus on predicting response to treatment and treatment efficacy as well as the genetic determinants of cancer. He is also interested in the development of novel therapies for cancers with limited treatment options such as Glioblastoma (GBM).Jack Gleeson: The HAL computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Gleeson has gained significant research experience in trial design and development with world class experts in the field. Having trained at the world renowned cancer centre that is Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, Dr. His genitourinary research has particularly focused on kidney and testicular cancers, while his brain tumour research focuses on both GBM and lower grade malignancies. Gleeson is particularly interested in genitourinary cancer and brain tumour research, and partakes in Phase I-III clinical trials.

His research interests include Genitourinary and Neuro-Oncology cancers in particular. He has had a distinguished career to date with numerous publications and awards, including the UCC Ainsworth Scholarship, Merit Awards at the ASCO GU Cancers Symposium and International Kidney Cancer Symposium and most recently was awarded the prestigious ASCO/Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award (YIA) for 2021/2022. He is a UCC graduate (2012, Hons) who completed his Medical Oncology training in Ireland through the RCPI before being awarded the Irish Society of Medical Oncology (ISMO) Advanced Oncology Fellowship award in 2018 to undertake a fellowship in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, which he completed in January 2021. Jack Gleeson is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Christie Hospital, Manchester.
